Day 14: Monday 23rd September 2013 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Cruising the Main River

It was an early start today, after a late night last night! We went through a few locks during the night, so sleep was a bit disturbed! We were up and ready for breakfast early so we were ready to leave for our day trips by 8.30am! BUT, we were delayed at a lock or two, so we were late getting to Bamberg where we met the coaches, so didn’t leave the ship till about 9.20am. We chose to go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber! It was a 1 hour 45 minute drive to get there by coach on the autobahn! Rothenburg ob der Tauber is completely surrounded by its city wall and is full of charm! It is the home of Germany’s famous and original Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas store, which we visited. There are thousands and thousands of Christmas decorations in the store! We decided to splurge and got a beautiful Christmas display that has a couple of windmills that spin around with the heat of tea light candles. It depicts the Nativity Scene in the centre, with the wise men and camels turning in one direction and some sheep and animals in the other. We organised to have it shipped home so we don’t have to worry about carrying it with us! After visiting the Christmas shop,
the buildings in Rothenburg have all retained their " old" look. You are not allowed to make any changes to the interior or exterior of the homes

Keith & Alison climbed the 217 stairs to the top of the tower in the old part of the town hall. From there, they had a fantastic view of the city below. (I enjoyed a coffee at a local cafĂ© while they climbed!) After that, there was only enough time for Alison to get a pin to add to her collection (she now has about 20) before it was time to get on the bus again and travel for over an hour back to the ship at Schweinfurt! We were there before the ship again as it had been delayed at another lock, so it was after 3.00pm when we got on board. So it was a very late lunch today! We left the lunch table at about 4.00pm! Then it was time to download photos and get our journals up to date while we cruised along for the afternoon. We are all rather tired due to the busy days, but wouldn’t trade this trip! We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon, then it was dinner time at 7.00pm – a bit too close to lunch so we didn’t eat so much tonight! After listening to Petra’s briefing in the lounge we headed to our cabin so Alison could get to bed – she is tired from all the later than usual nights!
