Day 31: Thursday, 10th October 2013: Dartmouth Castle, packing

I think Keith & I are both feeling a bit better today – still coughing but not as much. After a leisurely breakfast, we headed into Dartmouth with the aim of finding a hairdresser for me and to go to Dartmouth Castle. We first went to the Tourist Information Centre to get some ideas of where to find a hairdresser. They gave us 3 options, so we went looking. I was able to get an appointment for an hour later, at the first one we went to, so I took it. Keith, Alison and I went to a local café for a coffee, and then Keith & Ali headed off to see the castle. We planned to meet back at a bakery for lunch at about 1.00pm.  I went to the chemist to get some drops for Keith’s eyes, and filled in time wandering around for half an hour till it was time for my appointment. It was very relaxing sitting in the hairdressers chair getting my greys coloured and reading magazines. I am pleased with the result of my 1.5 hours in the hairdresser’s chair!
It took Keith & Alison about a half hour walk to the castle, then they did a tour of the castle that didn’t take them long so they went for walk to the river before returning to meet me for lunch. Dartmouth Castle has a history stretching back more than 600 years. Built to defend the town against raiders from the sea, it evolved as the threat changed and in order to accommodate newer and more effective weapons. In the Middle Ages, enemy ships could only be engaged at close range as they sailed through the narrow channel leading into the harbour. Later, more powerful guns meant that ships could be attacked as they approached the harbour entrance, so new gun batteries were built, extending the castle around the headland.

I met Keith & Alison at a local bakery where we had pasties for lunch before heading to the supermarket to get something for dinner and head home. Once back at the cottage, Keith & Alison went for a walk down to the beach and I did some cleaning and packing ready to leave for Wales tomorrow.
